Hello from Singapore! I am currently devising a very exciting performance with a group of 19 3rd year Theatre, Video Production and Arts Management students from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA).
The project builds on my work with Grace Leong, a NAFA theatre lecturer, who was in London last year studying at Royal Holloway. I created a dance puppet video for her and she performed with a projection of it at SEA Arts Fest.
For our new project we went to Ho Chi Minh City for a few days to do some research and let the students document Vietnamese Water Puppets. Now we are back in NAFA devising the performance based on our experiences.
First I got them all to work together in devised acting work and then I split them up today into their three groups. The video production students videoed the actors as their observers, documenters and alter-egos. The arts management students facilitated this relationship by creating a soundscape, providing props, and creating a physical terrain for the performance.
The NAFA project has been a most exhilarating one not least because I had three lots of students from such diverse disciplines to pull together to create something – anything!
The process yielded some fascinating results and progress was swift despite the unfamiliarity of students working in this manner. I can’t wait to see what the outcome will be!
The videos will be posted online soon so watch this space!
In the meantime here are some photos from our trip to Ho Chi Minh City and a sneak peak of our rehearsals to whet your appetite!
