Ni Madé Pujawati in the cross-gender Balinese dance Tarunajaya (The Victory of Youth) |
SEA Arts is currently working with The Foundation for Indian Performing Arts and River Cultures on a series of cross-Asian performances, which blend contemporary and classical elements of Indian, Indonesian and Chinese dance, drama and opera into completely new forms. Among a number of projects under way (see forthcoming performances) is a major new version of Tagore's Tasher Desh, the Land of Cards, which will also appear in early 2008 as a DVD. SEA Arts will also be working in London in early 2008 with the celebrated Indonesian film and television comic actor, Butèt Kertarajasa, on a version of his famous satirical political monologues translated into English for a general audience and a cross-genre piece Valhalla of Wretched Heroes, a reflection on the cult of heroism and celebrity. SEA Arts is also advising the Horniman Museum in South London on a proposed major exhibition on Balinese Story-telling and Dance planned for 2011.
