SEA Arts is a network of leading Asian dancers, actors and artists, key members of whom come from South East Asia and are exploring new directions in performance and exhibition. Our current activities include collaborating on a variety of cross-Asian dance dramas, organizing a major museum exhibition, and bringing celebrated theatre and opera performances to western audiences. There are many organizations involved in Asian performing arts, but very few work collaboratively across different regions or such a range of genres. We start from the recognition that, before its marketing to western audiences as ‘classical' or ‘contemporary', most performance in Asia has long been ‘total theatre' comprising singing, dancing, acting and story-telling with elegant costumes and decors, aimed at very broad audiences. We also appreciate that the exclusive preoccupation with the expression of artistic genius in live performance is dated in a world of digital recording which can reach out to very large audiences globally without previous access to such a range of performance. So SEA Arts is working together with recognized centres of excellence, the Centre for Media & Film Studies and the Music Department SOAS, University of London, to re-imagine performance for a digital age.
